Greener Cleaning Supplies
Have you ever wondered what’s in your soap? At Shedd, we pay attention to the ingredients in almost everything we use. Our animals are sensitive to some of the chemicals in cleaning products, so we use greener cleaning products. In many cases, vinegar and water are strong enough for our needs and better for our ecosystems than harsh chemicals. When we need something a little stronger we use products that are Green Seal certified. We also buy concentrated supplies and dilute them with water, which cuts down on what’s being shipped, saving fuel and resources. Many eco-friendly cleaning products can be made in your own home using common ingredients like baking soda, vinegar and good old elbow grease. Learn more about what you can do at home.

Great idea! But where are the recipes for cleaners(beyond vinegar and water)?

I would like to receive information regarding home made cleaning products. This would be a great project for young children in the schools. To understand how products can be made.

I mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and use it for glass and surface cleaning. For scrubbing, I use a squirt of castile soap and baking soda. Stayed tuned to www.sheddaquarium.org/conservation.html for more greentips.
