Shark pups update

Bookmark and Share

Shark-pup Many of you have asked for an update regarding the four blacktip reef sharks born last fall at Shedd (check out the video). Animal care is our top priority, which means we carefully manage our entire animal population. Given that our current collection of blacktip sharks is predominantly male, we have relocated the three male pups to other AZA-accredited aquariums or zoos, while caring for the female pup here at Shedd. We are pleased to report that all pups are growing fast and are in good health.

As for the pup in our care, she has grown to 24 inches and will soon be moved to our shark reserve area behind-the-scenes. When she reaches 36 inches she will join our other blacktip reef sharks on exhibit in Wild Reef. Stay tuned for future updates!

As for the bamboo shark eggs on exhibit in the Wild Reef, Shedd only displays young fertile bamboo shark eggs. We provide all of our animals with the best care, that’s why we remove all of our eggs from exhibit several weeks before they hatch. Because we carefully manage our animal population and work closely with our shark colleagues around the country, all of our bamboo shark pups born at Shedd are currently relocated to other AZA-accredited aquariums and zoos. Be sure to check out our shark eggs currently on exhibit in Wild Reef.
