Flight of Fantasea

More than 30 feet in the air, dangling in darkness over 2 million gallons of cold salt water, Rick Maloney takes a deep breath and prepares for the plunge.
Rick is a member of the Marine Mammals Department and a featured performer in the new aquatic show, Fantasea. In this magical production, dolphins jump and summersault, beluga whales tail walk and breach, and marine mammal trainers fly and freefall into the water from breathtaking heights.
The marine mammal trainers on the show team underwent rigorous rehearsals and a flight-training program to prepare for the show, and one aerial effect is especially demanding.
During the climax of Fantasea, three trainers are lowered from the ceiling, each sitting in the crook of an oversized umbrella. When the umbrellas reach 15 feet above the pool, the three black-and-white-suited trainers simultaneously drop, disappearing into the water below. Seconds later, three Pacific white-sided dolphins leap out of the water.
Even though the dolphin drop is over almost as soon as it begins, it took hours of rehearsing to perfect.
“After we learned to fall off the seat from 15 feet,” explains Maloney, “we had to learn how to load onto the umbrella from high in the ceiling.”
According to Rick, the anticipation of the drop is also part of the challenge. Once they load the umbrella, the trainers literally hang from the rafters and wait for the moment when they are lowered into full view of the audience. “Dropping 15 feet,” he says with a smile, “is less scary than just hanging there.”
“When I told my friends that I’d be working with dolphins and whales,” recalls Rick, “and putting on a harness and flying from the ceiling, they didn’t believe it.”

Awesome, I'm just wondering one thing. When are the beluga calves going to be born!! We've waited more than enough time!!

Great, and I'm so sorry to hear about Qannik, I didn't know until I searched "Point Defiance Belugas" and found that he died. Poor Mauyak, she doesn't know her son has died.

This show was AMAZING! My family (mom, sister, her spouse and three children)were visiting from out of state. I took them to the Shedd and what a treat. It was the first time for all of us. We thourghly enjoyed the show. My mom had hesitations saying "eh a "dolphin show"" After she was left speechless. The music was wonderful, the animals were CUTE and we are now lovers of the Shedd Aquarium.
Great job! We appreciate the effort and dedication that was put into the show. It will be a Christmas we remember forever.

Show was very theatrical...minimal education value and I was quite disappointed. I can see that a lot of work went into the production but I couldn't help feeling that it was more like a cartoon and not respectful of the animals.

I have to say "ditto" to RandyL's comments. I felt the show detracted from rather than enhanced showcasing the animals and their abilities.

The drop looks like it would have been scary.
