Making BLU "green"

BLUblog One of the most important things to Shedd’s Auxiliary Board is being aware of the impact that we as a group, and as individuals, have on the environment. This year the Auxiliary Board started a Conservation Committee to help us actualize some of our ideas and turn them into ways we can make a positive impact on the community. One of the goals of the Conservation Committee was to make BLU, our annual fundraising event taking place on July 17, as "green" as possible. With the help and guidance of the experts at Shedd we are proud to be taking the following steps to minimize the impact this event has on the environment:

Minimal signage will be produced and all signage will be printed on recyclable material

Volunteers will be helping guests sort their waste for composting and recycling during the event, minimizing the amount of waste that goes into landfills

BLU guests will receive a variety of gift certificates as they leave, minimizing waste by avoiding disposable knick knacks and large gift bags

There will be no floral or plant centerpieces at the event

Food and beverage vendors will be provided with compostable cups, flatware, napkins and plates

The event will feature water stations with compostable cups instead of serving bottled water

Invitations were printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper by a local "green" printer, Consolidated Printing Company, using vegetable based inks and designed to use as little paper as possible

BLU is using electronic ticketing to eliminate paper tickets

Many of the food vendors are partners with Shedd’s Right Bite program and are serving sustainable seafood

We are looking forward to a fun, safe and "green" event this year. Hope you can join us at BLU on July 17th!
