Congratulations Tique

Tique-2web We are pleased to announce that one of Shedd's Pacific white-sided dolphins, Tique (TEE-kay), is pregnant as a result of a partnership with the Miami Seaquarium. Pacific white-sided dolphin pregnancies last approximately 12 months. Shedd anticipates the birth of Tique’s calf in mid-May, although the birth could occur earlier or later.

A Different Archer for Valentine’s Day

Archerfish “Cupid, draw back your bow, and let your arrow go straight to my lover’s heart for me.” So sang R&B legend Sam Cooke. It’s a different tune in Shedd Aquarium’s Waters of the World Rivers gallery, where deadly accurate (and thankfully small) banded archerfish from the brackish mangrove estuaries of the Indo-Pacific and northern Australia spit down their insect prey with high-pressure “arrows” of water.

February Fish of the Month - Atlantic Red Crab

MSC It is the month of love and the Right Bite team is seeing red! February’s Fish of the Month is the Marine Stewardship Council certified Atlantic red crab. Yes, we are smitten with this new crab on the block for its sweet flavor and sustainability.

In 2002, a fishery management plan ensured the young fleet kept its modest landings. Currently, there are only four vessels in the fleet, each with a strict total catch limit. With increasing demand for red crab, it is crucial that wild populations are given sufficient time to repopulate and renew. This approach to fishing helped the Atlantic red crab fishery become certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) in 2009, the world’s leading certification and ecolabelling program for sustainable seafood.

Snow days at Shedd

A major blizzard has hit Chicago, but our 32,000 residents will still receive top care even if we are not open to the public. The blizzard may have forced us to close the aquarium for the day on Wednesday, which is mainly a safety precaution for our guests and our staff. Although most employees will get to take a snow day on Wednesday, the facilities staff, security staff, and animal care staff will still be working.
