Welcome back the dolphins!

Dolphin This month the dolphins once again take center stage in Shedd’s daily aquatic shows in the Abbott Oceanarium. You may see all four, including Tique. The other females are Kri, Katrl and Ohana. Ken Ramirez, executive v.p. of animal programs and training, says Tique is enjoying her interactions with the trainers and the camaraderie of the other dolphins. During the shows, you could also see our sea lion Tyler, one of the red-tailed hawks, or our promenading penguins. And don’t be surprised if the belugas are in the spotlight for some of the shows. Whichever animals you see, you’re guaranteed a unique show every time.

So nice to see that Tique is doing better. The loss of the calf is still tragic, but everything happens for a reason, and there's a lesson or two to be learned from this. For example, do NOT make a pregnant dolphin travel 1 K miles so she could give birth. I wouldn't do that. ;)

that said about that

What do you guys do when people mention the movie "The Cove" to you and express their feelings against dolphin shows? What do you say to them?

Sorry if I seemed ignorant in my previous comment, I was expressing my discontent for the one bad move I've seen Shedd make in a long time. The Oceanarium is a wonderful, world-class exhibit with top-notch veteranary care and great penguin and beluga breeding programs. Let's hope third time is the charm for Naya sometime soon!

Thanks for your question, Kate. Shedd Aquarium’s mission is to inspire our guests to care about our planet and all living things. We do this is by creating opportunities for meaningful connections between our guests and the amazing animals we care for. One example is our aquatic animal show, which delights and educates guests of all ages as the marine mammals demonstrate their natural behaviors, such as spy-hopping, tail-walking, and leaps in the air. Our trainers only use positive reinforcement to encourage the animals to show off what they do in nature. The show is designed around the needs of the animals, but it also encourages people to think about what we can all do to help protect the places where the animals live. If you haven’t already experienced our aquatic show, we hope you’ll visit soon to see for yourself the wonderful relationships our trainers have with the animals in our care.
