Oceanarium Animal Homecoming
After nearly nine months “on vacation,” our beluga whales, Pacific white-sided dolphins and Alaska sea otters are back home. We’ve also welcomed new animals to the Oceanarium family, including two California sea lions, temperate-weather penguins, a new Pacific white-sided dolphin and a variety of Pacific Northwest fishes and invertebrates.
Animal care is our top priority. Whether they were moved by road, by air, or by a combination of the two, all of the animals traveled safely and quickly, thanks to careful planning and the training we did with them before they were moved.
Here are highlights of their journey back to Shedd.

Please Pass the Salt!
Oceanarium progress update: The pools are filled with water! But that’s just the first step in preparing for the much-anticipated return of the belugas, dolphins and other marine mammals.
Shedd’s Facilities team is involved in a two-week process to take delivery of salt – lots and lots of it. On Monday, April 6, we started receiving the first shipment of 403 bags of Instant Ocean Sea Salt®, a commercial marine salt mix.

Otters and Oil, 20 Years Later
Twenty years ago this week the oil tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground in Alaska’s Prince William Sound, spilling 11 million gallons of North Slope crude on 1,100 miles of pristine coastline. The immediate toll on wildlife was horrific.

Oceanarium Media Event
On February 25th, Shedd held a special media event regarding the Oceanarium renovation. For the first time publicly, Shedd unveiled visuals of the reimagined Oceanarium, including new and updated exhibits, engaging programs, and improved guest amenities. Following the announcement, members of media took a hardhat tour of the construction site. The announcement received national media attention and below are a few stories from the Chicago media we wanted to share:
